GoodNews: Ronald Acuna, Jr. Reviews-This veteran could boost Braves’ bench

The potential addition of Kevin Pillar could enhance the Braves’ bench. A little over a month ago, the Braves traded Nicky Lopez, despite earlier indications that keeping him was the logical choice. I offer my apologies to Kevin Pillar and those advocating for his return to the Braves this season.

I am now making the case for the Braves to re-sign Pillar, especially considering the recent acquisition of Luis Guillorme, who solidifies the role of the primary backup infielder. While David Fletcher remains in consideration, the option to keep him at the Triple-A level is also available.

Assuming Guillorme is the sole infielder on the Opening Day roster for accounting purposes, two roster spots for position players are available on the 26-man roster, which will include 13 pitchers.

The projected position players include Sean Murphy, Travis d’Arnaud, Matt Olson, Ozzie Albies, Orlando Arcia, Austin Riley, Jarred Kelenic, Michael Harris II, Ronald Acuña Jr., Marcell Ozuna, Guillorme, an outfielder to be determined, and an infield/outfield player to be determined.

Pillar, a valuable veteran who earned respect in the Braves’ clubhouse last year, can provide excellent defensive coverage in all outfield positions. With experience gained in a backup role last year, he could be a valuable addition. The Braves require a right-handed-hitting outfielder capable of playing multiple positions, particularly to spell Kelenic in left field. Pillar could potentially contribute in left field and occasionally relieve Harris in center field, with Kelenic’s versatility creating additional playing opportunities.

Despite being a 35-year-old free agent nearing the end of his career, Pillar’s successful production and positive attitude as a backup last year make bringing him back a sensible choice. However, as seen in the Lopez situation, if history repeats itself, Pillar may find employment with another team shortly after reading this.
