Bills Expected to Make More Moves Following Josh Allen’s Extension
The Buffalo Bills have secured their franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future, and in the process, may have created the flexibility for additional roster moves.
On March 9, the team announced a contract extension for Josh Allen, keeping him in Buffalo through 2030. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the six-year, $330 million deal includes a record-setting $250 million in guaranteed money.
This extension also cleared significant salary cap space, and coupled with another major roster decision on Sunday, has led insiders to speculate that more moves could be on the horizon.
Bills Create Cap Room With Allen’s Deal
While the exact cap implications of Allen’s contract remain unclear, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell pointed out that its structure allows Buffalo to continue strengthening the roster.
“Allen’s last contract had a Mahomes-like structure, and I expect this one to be similar,” Barnwell posted on X. “Taking the Trevor Lawrence annual salary against a much higher cap is a win for the Bills and a generous team-friendly move by Allen.”
Buffalo has taken a calculated approach to free agency in recent years, prioritizing depth and key role players without overspending.
The team also freed up additional cap space earlier on Sunday by releasing veteran pass-rusher Von Miller. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Bills may consider bringing Miller back on a new, more affordable deal.
“The #Bills are releasing pass-rusher Von Miller, per me and @TomPelissero,” Rapoport reported on X. “Miller turns 36 before the 2025 season, and Buffalo is making the move now. However, both sides are open to a potential return.”
Potential Trades and Internal Decisions Ahead
Some insiders, including WGR 550’s Nate Geary, believe general manager Brandon Beane could be eyeing a bold move, possibly a significant trade-up in the draft. After missing out on top targets like Myles Garrett and D.K. Metcalf, the Bills may look to make a splash via the draft.
Internally, the team could also focus on extending key contributors. Running back James Cook, entering the final year of his rookie contract, has been vocal about securing a long-term deal. Cook had a breakout 2024 season, rushing for a league-record 16 touchdowns and surpassing 1,000 yards for the second straight year—something no Bills player has done since LeSean McCoy.
Additionally, Buffalo faces decisions on key free agents, including wide receivers Amari Cooper and Mack Hollins, as well as starting safety Damar Hamlin, who has finished his rookie contract.
