This season hasn’t gone as New York Rangers fans had hoped after their strong Conference Finals run. The team has been inconsistent, struggling to stay in playoff contention. Some key veterans, including franchise star Chris Kreider, have notably underperformed.

Kreider has failed to meet expectations this season, leading to the possibility of his ice time being reduced or even cut. As the Rangers look for a jolt in their lineup, top prospect Brennan Othmann might be the perfect candidate to step in. However, his opportunity could come at the cost of Kreider’s playing time.

Should the Rangers bench Chris Kreider in favor of Brennan Othmann?

Brennan Othmann (Rangers) Is Unfortunately Now Out Until December

Othmann has been having an exceptional season with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack. Recently, he’s been on fire, scoring nine goals in his last 11 games, bringing his total to 19 points in 25 games. In contrast, Kreider has been cold, with only two goals and two assists in his past 10 games. He has just 20 points in 47 games this season, along with a -6 rating. The 33-year-old winger hasn’t been contributing at the level expected. Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette has already dropped Kreider to the third line, which has diminished his impact. Further reduction in his role might be necessary. It could be time for the Rangers to consider scratching Kreider and giving the hot-handed Othmann a shot.

Othmann, a 2021 first-round pick, has been outstanding in the AHL for two consecutive seasons. He’s only played three NHL games so far, failing to record a point, but could be primed for another opportunity.

Currently, the Rangers are fifth in the Metropolitan Division with 58 points, on the outside looking in at the playoff picture. However, they’re still in the mix for a Wild Card spot. Othmann’s scoring ability and energy could be just what the team needs to make a late push.
