The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defied expectations in the 2023 season, originally projected to be a 5-win team and poised for a top-10 draft pick. This outlook stemmed from the retirement of the legendary Tom Brady, leaving Kyle Trask as the sole quarterback on the roster. However, the addition of Baker Mayfield in the offseason changed the narrative. Mayfield, seeking to prove himself after stints in Carolina and Los Angeles, quickly secured the starting quarterback position over Trask.
The Buccaneers began the season with a promising 3-1 record, with Mayfield leading the team to victories in three out of the first four games. Despite a loss to the Eagles in Week 3, Mayfield showcased his talent, particularly in wins against the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints. His performance, amassing 882 passing yards, 7 touchdowns, and just 2 interceptions by the end of Week 4, drew attention and raised questions about the team’s unexpected success.
However, the Buccaneers endured a challenging stretch, losing six of the next seven games. Despite a competitive showing against formidable opponents like the Buffalo Bills, the team faced setbacks, including a shutout loss to the Detroit Lions and a narrow defeat against the Atlanta Falcons.
The season ended on a positive note, with the Buccaneers winning five of their last six games and clinching a playoff spot as the 4-seed. Notable victories included a tense matchup against the Carolina Panthers and a dominant performance against the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs.
Looking ahead to the offseason, the Buccaneers face decisions regarding key players, including Baker Mayfield, Mike Evans, Antoine Winfield Jr., and Tristan Wirfs, who are set to become free agents. Efforts have been made to retain Mayfield, including hiring Liam Coen, his former offensive coordinator with the Rams. Retaining key players like Evans and Wirfs will be crucial for maintaining a strong offense.
Despite challenges, the Buccaneers remain optimistic about their future prospects. With a solid foundation and strategic decisions in the offseason, they aim to contend for another championship, recognizing that success hinges on roster management and effective drafting.
