NFL RB Rankings: Is Ravens’ Gus Edwards Underrated?
The Baltimore Ravens boasted a formidable running game in the NFL this season, with Gus Edwards playing a significant role among a rotating cast of players. Despite sharing carries with Justice Hill, Keaton Mitchell (before his injury), and Melvin Gordon, Edwards stood out. Under new offensive coordinator Todd Monken, the Ravens’ rushing attack excelled, leading the league with an impressive 156.5 yards per game.
However, NFL.com’s assessment of starting running backs ranked Edwards at a modest 20th place. While Edwards offered the Ravens a powerful, downhill running style, Lamar Jackson’s dynamic rushing ability and the presence of Mitchell and Hill as change-of-pace options were also noted. Nevertheless, Edwards’ contribution was significant, leading Baltimore with 13 rushing touchdowns, which tied for fifth in the league.
Although Edwards’ season statistics—810 yards from 198 attempts—may not immediately impress, his involvement in a running back committee can limit individual numbers. Despite this, Edwards showcased his scoring prowess with a career-high 13 touchdowns, including a notable streak of nine touchdowns over a five-game span from Week 7 to Week 11. While Mitchell’s recovery from injury may affect the dynamic of the backfield, Edwards’ consistent production suggests he could remain a Raven in 2024.
With Edwards set to become a free agent and his market value estimated at $3.6 million APY per spotrac.com, the Ravens must consider retaining him. Given his impressive touchdown tally and the potential for further growth under Monken’s offense alongside Lamar Jackson, Edwards could climb higher in the rankings next season.
