Phillies NEW Updates

While the trade deadline is still three months away, the Philadelphia Phillies are already preparing for potential moves. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Phillies are closely monitoring Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley, a name that’s been swirling in trade rumors.

Nightengale reports that the Phillies, along with the Diamondbacks, are keeping a close watch on Helsley, who is expected to be dealt before the deadline. The 30-year-old two-time All-Star, who won last year’s Trevor Hoffman Reliever of the Year Award, led the league with 49 saves and posted a 2.04 ERA across 65 appearances in 2023. Although St. Louis considered trading him last season, they chose to keep him in an attempt to remain competitive.

As Bailey Digh of Phillies Nation highlights, Helsley’s reputation as one of the game’s top closers is well-earned. With free agency approaching this winter, Helsley’s trade value might be slightly more reasonable than in the past, though he still won’t come cheap. Teams seeking his services will count on him to lock down crucial late-game situations, especially in the postseason, thanks to his 100 mph fastball and dominant presence.

Philadelphia, however, has drawn a clear line regarding trade negotiations: they refuse to include top prospects Andrew Painter or Aidan Miller. Painter, currently in Low-A Clearwater, is targeting a summer MLB debut, while Miller, despite a slow start at Double-A Reading, remains highly valued by the organization.

Although the Phillies’ bullpen has been mostly reliable, late-game inconsistencies have surfaced. José Alvarado and Matt Strahm have handled many high-leverage innings, and right-hander Orion Kerkering has seen some closing duties, though he’s struggled with command. New addition Jordan Romano has also dealt with inconsistency and minor injuries. Without a true, locked-in closer, it’s understandable why the Phillies are exploring ways to strengthen the back end of their bullpen.

While there’s still plenty of time before major trades materialize, Philadelphia’s early interest in Helsley could be the first step in what promises to be a busy deadline season.
