SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – While Michiana braces for snow, the Notre Dame baseball team is gearing up for its season opener this weekend—not in the cold, but under the Florida sun.
After a disappointing 2024 campaign, where they finished 27-25 overall and just 9-21 in ACC play, the Fighting Irish are looking for a turnaround. Fortunately, much of this year’s roster won’t be dwelling on the past, as the team features 15 freshmen eager to make an impact.
“Obviously, we don’t like talking about last season, but the results weren’t what we wanted,” said senior outfielder Brady Gumpf. “With a fresh group and new faces, the goal remains the same—getting to Omaha. We’re focused on motivating and trusting each other, taking things one step at a time, starting with the ACC Tournament and then pushing through the NCAA Tournament.”
Notre Dame kicks off its season on Friday against North Florida, with ACC play beginning in March. This gives the young roster valuable time to gel before facing conference competition.
“Momentum is key—we have to build it in our work, our habits, and our daily approach,” said head coach Shawn Stiffler. “We’ve talked a lot about keeping faith, and as Marcus Freeman says, ‘belief without knowing.’ If we stick to the process and trust in what works, we believe the results will come.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish baseball team is introducing several new players for the 2025 season, aiming to revitalize their roster after a challenging previous year. The team has welcomed 15 freshmen, bringing fresh energy and talent to the lineup. Notable newcomers include:
-
Noah Coy: An infielder from Greenwood, Indiana, standing at 5’11”.
-
Jonathan Holt: A 6’2″ infielder hailing from Glen Mills, Pennsylvania.
-
Trent Hartman: A 5’10” catcher from Cincinnati, Ohio.
These additions, among others, are expected to play pivotal roles as the team strives for a successful turnaround this season.
