It’s no secret that the Buffalo Bills must address their defensive struggles this offseason. Whether through free agency or the draft, general manager Brandon Beane needs to reinforce all three levels of the defense after injuries and inconsistent performances took a toll in 2024.
The Bills’ defense was hit hard last season, losing key players like Mike Edwards and Cole Bishop to injuries early on, forcing the team to sign veteran Kareem Jackson for depth. Later, linebacker Matt Milano suffered a torn bicep, sidelining him for most of the season. While the unit remained competitive, there were games where defensive lapses directly contributed to losses. The team’s run defense was especially problematic, with its worst showing coming in a Week 4 loss to the Ravens, where they allowed 271 rushing yards in a 35-10 defeat.
Buffalo’s approach in free agency will likely shape its draft strategy, but Beane and head coach Sean McDermott have historically prioritized building through the draft. In a recent three-round mock draft, the Bills focused on strengthening their defense with key additions:
- Round 1, Pick 30: DT Kenneth Grant (Michigan) – A 6’3”, 340-pound force, Grant would provide much-needed interior strength alongside Ed Oliver, helping to stop the run and generate inside pressure
- Round 2, Pick 56 (from MIN): DE Jack Sawyer (Ohio State) – A disruptive edge rusher, Sawyer had a breakout season at Ohio State and could help fill potential departures on the defensive line.
- Round 2, Pick 62: CB Darien Porter (Iowa State) – With Rasul Douglas set to hit free agency, the Bills may need secondary help, making Porter a logical addition to their defensive backfield.
With several roster questions to answer, Buffalo appears set to make defense its top priority in the 2025 NFL Draft.
