The New York Rangers will be without star goaltender Igor Shesterkin for at least one to two weeks after he sustained an upper-body injury against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Shesterkin appeared to tweak something while lunging for the puck in the first period and later showed discomfort in his right wrist following a net-front scramble in the second. Although the injury isn’t considered long-term, it’s uncertain if he will be ready when the NHL schedule resumes on February 22.
This is Shesterkin’s second upper-body injury of the season, as he previously landed on injured reserve in December. In response, the Rangers have recalled Dylan Garand from the Hartford Wolf Pack to support Jonathan Quick in net. While the timing is unfortunate, the NHL break for the 4 Nations Face-Off should limit the impact of his absence.

Shesterkin, regarded as one of the league’s top goaltenders, is set to become the NHL’s highest-paid netminder at $11.5 million per year. However, his performance this season has drawn scrutiny, with some questioning whether his production justifies the hefty contract.
