Rangers hit with more injury setbacks
The New York Rangers have been dealt another blow on the injury front, adding to their growing list of challenges.
Mathew Barzal, a top-line forward for the Islanders, is out indefinitely due to a lower-body injury he sustained in the final minutes of a 3-2 overtime win against Tampa Bay. Defenseman Scott Mayfield also left the game with a lower-body injury and is listed as day-to-day. Neither player suited up for the Rangers’ 6-3 road loss to the Florida Panthers.
Currently, the Rangers are trailing the Islanders by one point in the standings and are four points behind the Red Wings and Blue Jackets for the wild card spot. Barzal’s absence marks another major blow to the Islanders as they struggle to stay competitive despite multiple injuries.
The injury news doesn’t end there, as defenseman Ryan Pulock and top offensive defenseman Noah Dobson are also sidelined, leaving the Islanders shorthanded on the blue line. On top of that, goaltender Semyon Varlamov is still out with a lower-body injury, and recent trade acquisitions like Tony DeAngelo and Scott Perunovich have been trying to fill in the gaps.
For the Rangers, this adds more uncertainty to an already difficult season as they try to stay within reach of a playoff spot. With the Islanders pushing ahead, the Rangers will need to regroup quickly to maintain their position in the standings.
