The San Diego Padres, who have had a relatively quiet offseason, are reportedly exploring a trade for Minnesota Twins veteran catcher Christian Vázquez. While not the blockbuster move fans might be hoping for, the deal would address a key area of need for the Padres.
San Diego struggled to get consistent production from the catcher position in 2024, with Luis Campusano and Kyle Higashioka posting batting averages of .227 and .220, respectively. Although Vázquez hit just .221 with seven home runs last season, the Padres view him as an upgrade over Campusano, prompting discussions between the two teams.
According to Dan Hayes and Dennis Lin of The Athletic, “The Minnesota Twins and San Diego Padres have spoken about a potential trade that would send veteran catcher Christian Vázquez to San Diego. No deal was considered imminent as of Wednesday, but there appeared to be motivation on both sides to continue talks.”
While the Padres haven’t made significant waves this offseason, adding Vázquez could provide a veteran presence and stability behind the plate as the team looks to stay competitive in the National League.
