Russell Wilson Discusses His Steelers Future and Reflects on Past Coaches
Russell Wilson, now with the Pittsburgh Steelers following his release from the Denver Broncos in the 2024 offseason, expressed gratitude to Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. He praised Tomlin alongside former Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, describing both as “great coaches” who excel in leadership and building a strong culture.
Notably absent from his remarks was former Broncos head coach Sean Payton, under whom Wilson had a contentious relationship. Wilson was benched by Payton during the 2023 season’s final games, leading to his release and leaving the Broncos with a record $85 million dead cap hit.
Future with the Steelers
Wilson, who signed a one-year, $1.2 million deal with Pittsburgh, is hopeful about staying with the team despite the season’s rocky conclusion—a four-game losing streak and an AFC Wild Card loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Preliminary talks about a contract extension have taken place, though no decisions have been made.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to be with the Steelers longer,” Wilson shared. He praised Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan, emphasizing their vision and team-building efforts.
In 2024, Wilson threw for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions over 11 games, plus one postseason appearance, after recovering from a preseason calf injury.
Comments on Steelers’ Offensive Coordinator
Amid reports of friction with Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, Wilson clarified his perspective. “I respect Arthur as a teacher, coach, and competitor,” Wilson said, adding that such rumors often surface during tough times.
Reflecting on his experience, Wilson noted, “The longer you’re in a system, the better it gets. Stability is key for success, as seen with players like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.”
Despite avoiding direct criticism of Sean Payton, Wilson’s remarks highlight a disconnect with the Broncos during his tenure. He described his time in Pittsburgh as revitalizing and looks forward to potentially continuing with the Steelers.
