EAGAN, MN — The Minnesota Vikings announced Tuesday that Head Coach Kevin O’Connell has signed a multiyear contract extension. While the terms of the deal have not been disclosed, the move reflects the organization’s confidence in O’Connell’s leadership.
At 39, O’Connell has already made NFL history, becoming the first head coach to win 14 games in a quarterback’s debut season with a team, leading the Vikings with Sam Darnold at quarterback. Additionally, he is only the fifth coach in league history to achieve multiple 13-win seasons within his first three years.
In 2024, O’Connell led Minnesota to a remarkable 14-3 record, far exceeding preseason expectations, which projected just 6.5 wins. His success has placed him firmly in the conversation for NFL Coach of the Year honors.
“Kevin is exactly who we believed him to be when we hired him—an innovative play-caller, an excellent communicator, and a strong leader who motivates and connects with his players,” said Vikings Owner and President Mark Wilf in a statement. “He has helped establish a culture that positions us for sustained success and will continue to set the standard as we pursue a championship for Vikings fans.”
Vikings Owner and Chairman Zygi Wilf echoed the sentiment, stating: “There is no doubt this team is on the right trajectory under Kevin’s leadership. His authenticity, passion, and understanding of the game have been crucial to our success over the past three years and will serve as a foundation for the future.”
O’Connell expressed his gratitude for the extension and his role with the organization. “It is an absolute honor to continue leading the Minnesota Vikings,” O’Connell said. “This prestigious position is something I never take for granted, and I am deeply grateful to the Wilf family for believing in what we’re building.”
O’Connell also acknowledged his family, coaches, players, and support staff for their contributions to the team’s success. “Their dedication makes it all possible,” he said.
Finally, O’Connell shared a heartfelt message for Vikings fans. “You are the best in the NFL,” he said. “There’s no greater joy than leading our team in front of you each Sunday and experiencing the home-field advantage you create. I’m excited for the years ahead.”
