JUST IN: More bad news for Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings face significant offseason decisions, including the future of veteran safety Harrison Smith. Smith, a key player throughout his 13-year career with the team, recently received a $45,020 fine for “impermissible use of helmet” during the Wild Card Playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams. This was one of 13 fines issued by the league during Wild Card weekend, with Smith’s penalty being among the highest.

Smith has had a remarkable career, earning $96.4 million to date, according to Over The Cap. At 35 years old and approaching his 36th birthday in February, his future in the NFL remains uncertain. Smith reflected emotionally on his time with teammates Camryn Bynum and Josh Metellus, as well as on the impact of defensive coordinator Brian Flores, who he credited with making the past season one of his most enjoyable despite the physical challenges of the game.

The veteran safety played the 2024 season on a one-year, $9 million deal, leaving his status for 2025 in question. While Smith remains a valuable presence both on and off the field, the Vikings must also address other roster needs, including the potential departure of free agent Bynum. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has praised Smith’s leadership, but whether the team retains him depends on broader roster priorities.

The Vikings faced several fines during the season, with Smith’s being the largest. Other players penalized included Byron Murphy for taunting, Jerry Tillery for a hit on a defenseless player, and Cam Akers for helmet infractions. In total, Vikings players were fined $127,000 during the 2024 season, contributing to the league-wide fines exceeding $12 million.

Harrison Smith, Minnesota Vikings

As the offseason progresses, the Vikings must decide whether to bring back Smith, who is widely regarded as a future Hall of Famer. His leadership and performance have been integral to the team, but financial and roster considerations will play a major role in determining his future with the organization.
