Connor McDavid Faces Suspension After Ejection Against Canucks
Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid may face suspension following his ejection in Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks. The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that McDavid will attend a hearing after receiving a match penalty for cross-checking Vancouver’s Connor Garland late in the game.
The altercation began as the two tangled after a scoring opportunity. McDavid’s high cross-check on Garland led to a fight involving both teams, resulting in 52 combined penalty minutes. Garland was also penalized with a two-minute minor for roughing.
Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch attributed McDavid’s actions to frustration, noting the star player had been held without interference calls during a critical moment. “His stick got up because he was frustrated,” Knoblauch explained.
McDavid is no stranger to disciplinary action. He was suspended for two games in 2019 for a hit to the head and fined $5,000 in 2021 for a separate incident. This hearing will be conducted via phone, suggesting any potential suspension will be under five games.
In the same game, Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers received a match penalty for a cross-check against Evan Bouchard in the closing seconds. Myers will also attend a hearing regarding his actions.
The Oilers, now 29-14-3, will host the Washington Capitals on Tuesday before facing the Canucks again on Thursday.
