JUST IN: Tigers Re-Sign 2 veteran catcher On Minor League Deal

The Tigers are bringing back veteran catcher Tomas Nido on a minor league deal, according to Mike Mayer of Metsmerized. Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press adds that Nido will earn a $1.5MM base salary if he makes the Major League roster. Represented by ACES, Nido will attend spring training as a non-roster invitee.

Nido, who turns 31 in April, began the 2024 season with the Mets before being released and later signing free-agent deals with both the Cubs and Tigers. However, he only appeared in three Triple-A games for Detroit after joining them in mid-September.

Known for his excellent defense but limited offense, Nido is a career .210/.245/.309 hitter (53 wRC+) across 323 games and 945 plate appearances. He has a 26% career strikeout rate and a 4.1% walk rate. Despite his struggles at the plate, his elite framing, blocking, and throwing skills have earned him significant MLB opportunities. Nido has thrown out 22% of attempted base stealers in his career, including a 22.7% success rate over 359 innings in 2024, surpassing the league average of 20.3%.

Currently, the Tigers appear set at the Major League level for catching. Jake Rogers will return as the starter, coming off a 2024 season where he hit .197/.255/.352 but earned a Gold Glove finalist nod. He’s just a year removed from a 21-homer campaign with near league-average offensive production.

Dillon Dingler, a former second-round pick, is the frontrunner to back up Rogers. Although Dingler struggled in a brief MLB stint, batting .167/.195/.310 in 87 plate appearances, he excelled at Triple-A Toledo, slashing .308/.379/.559 (139 wRC+) with 17 home runs in 301 plate appearances. Defensively, he also stood out, receiving above-average framing and blocking grades and throwing out 38% of attempted base stealers in Toledo.
