JUST IN: Virginia Tech Hokies land another talented wide receiver

Virginia Tech football: Hokies secure wide receiver Donavon Greene

It’s been an eventful week for the Virginia Tech Hokies. The momentum started Monday when three players announced their plans to transfer to Virginia Tech. By Friday, the Hokies had added five more commitments, including a standout wide receiver.

Wake Forest’s Donavon Greene revealed on Instagram that he’s heading to Blacksburg. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound receiver was a four-star recruit out of Mount Airy High School in North Carolina back in 2019 and one of the highest-rated players to sign with Wake Forest at the time. After redshirting his first year, Greene started all eight games in 2020, tallying 29 receptions for 582 yards (20.1 YPR) and two touchdowns.

Injuries sidelined Greene for the 2021 and 2023 seasons, but he made a significant impact when healthy. In 2022, he recorded 37 catches for 642 yards (17.4 YPR) and six touchdowns. In 2024, he managed 23 receptions for 380 yards (16.5 YPR) and three touchdowns.

Health has been Greene’s biggest hurdle, but his size, speed, and talent make him a valuable asset. He is expected to join the Hokies’ starting lineup in 2025, a critical addition as Virginia Tech faces significant roster turnover. The team is losing key receivers Jaylin Lane, Da’Quan Felton, Ali Jennings, and Stephen Gosnell to the NFL draft, while Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw and Chance Fitzgerald have transferred. Rising junior Ayden Green and freshmen Brodie Adams and Chanz Wiggins are set to step up, alongside highly-touted recruit Snook Peterkin, who could play a big role next season.

The Hokies also added Cameron Seldon, the top-ranked player from Virginia, through the transfer portal. Seldon is expected to contribute as a wide receiver and in the backfield, bringing versatility to the team. Greene’s experience will provide stability to the receiving corps and could make him a major contributor if he stays healthy.

Notably, Greene hails from Mount Airy High School, which also produced Hokies RB Tyler Mason and DE Deric Dandy. Mount Airy is just 90 minutes from Blacksburg, adding a hometown connection to Greene’s transfer. He becomes the 17th player Virginia Tech has added via the portal and the sixth this week.

Welcome to Blacksburg, Donavon!
