JUST IN: Braves lands in another infielder to a minor league contract

The Atlanta Braves have signed infielder Eddy Alvarez to a minor league contract, as listed on his MLB.com transaction log. Alvarez, who turns 35 later this month, joins his seventh organization as he enters his 12th professional season.

After spending seven years in the minors with the White Sox and Marlins, Alvarez made his MLB debut with Miami in 2020. Since then, he has played in 63 major league games with the Marlins, Dodgers, and Mets between 2020 and 2024, compiling a .170/.257/.244 slash line with one home run and four stolen bases. While primarily an infielder with experience at second base, third base, and shortstop, Alvarez also saw limited action in the outfield during his time with the Dodgers in 2022.

Between his MLB appearances with the Dodgers and Mets, Alvarez played in the Brewers (2023) and Red Sox (2023-24) farm systems. Despite a strong performance at Triple-A after signing a minor league deal with the Brewers ahead of the 2023 season, he wasn’t called up and opted out of his contract in July. He then signed with the Red Sox but suffered a season-ending injury in his first game with Triple-A Worcester.

In 2024, Alvarez bounced back with a productive campaign in Worcester. While he didn’t earn a call-up to Boston, his performance caught the Mets’ attention late in the season. The Mets acquired him for cash in September and added him to their roster the next day. Alvarez made his first MLB appearance in over two years as a pinch-runner on September 9 and remained on the roster through the regular season, though he was ineligible for postseason play due to his late arrival.

Now with the Braves, Alvarez aims to return to the majors in 2025. While he’s unlikely to make the Opening Day roster, Atlanta’s limited infield depth could provide an opportunity for him to earn a spot on the active roster later in the season if he performs well at Triple-A.
