Dabo Swinney Confirms Search for New Defensive Coordinator
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney announced on January 6 that the program is actively searching for a new defensive coordinator. The news follows reports that Wes Goodwin, who has served in the role since 2021, will not be returning for the 2025 season. Swinney expressed optimism about filling the position by the end of January.
“Our staff is hard at work on our roster, and we look forward to securing a defensive coordinator who will help lead this talented group as we pursue our 2025 goals,” Swinney said.
Goodwin, who was promoted after Brent Venables departed for Oklahoma in 2021, brought experience as an analyst under Venables but had limited hands-on coaching experience. While Goodwin received recognition in 2023 as a Broyles Award nominee, Clemson’s defense struggled significantly in 2024, allowing 4.7 yards per carry and giving up over 200 rushing yards in several key games.
Swinney thanked Goodwin for his dedication, stating, “Wes has been a vital part of our program for many years, contributing to our success. I wish him and his family the best as they move forward.” Goodwin’s contract runs through 2026 with a $1.4 million annual salary, but Clemson’s financial obligations could be offset if he secures another coaching position.
There is speculation that Venables may bring Goodwin to his staff at Oklahoma, but no official moves have been made. As the Tigers rebuild their coaching staff, Swinney remains focused on finding a leader to strengthen the defense for the upcoming season.
