JUST IN: Virginia Tech linebacker commits to rising AAC program

Former Virginia Tech Linebacker Joins Rising AAC Program

Sam Brumfield has found a new home in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) for the 2025 season. The former Virginia Tech linebacker, who benefited from a recent NCAA waiver granting additional eligibility to former JUCO players, has committed to Memphis.

Brumfield Heads to Memphis
On Saturday night, Brumfield announced his commitment to Memphis via his X account. Memphis, a program on the rise in the AAC, secured 10 wins in 2023 and followed it up with an 11-win season in 2024. Brumfield is expected to bring valuable veteran leadership to the Tigers’ linebacking corps.

Standing at 5-foot-11 and 225 pounds, Brumfield showcased his defensive skills this past season, playing in all 12 regular-season games for Virginia Tech. He tallied 60 tackles, including 1.5 sacks, and recorded a critical fumble recovery against Miami in September. Though his tackle numbers were down from the 82 he posted at Middle Tennessee State in 2023, he still delivered solid performances, notching a season-high seven tackles in games against Vanderbilt, Stanford, and Georgia Tech.

Virginia Tech’s Young Core and Brumfield’s Decision
Virginia Tech is set to rely on emerging talents like Caleb Woodson and Jaden Keller, who led the team in tackles during the 2024 season. Brumfield, a Mississippi native, likely recognized the Hokies’ youth movement and the impact of defensive coordinator Chris Marve’s firing on his role, prompting his decision to enter the transfer portal.

Brumfield’s move to Memphis provides him an opportunity to finish his college career with a program on an upward trajectory, where his experience will play a key role in bolstering the Tigers’ defense.
