Miami Falls to Virginia Tech in Nail-Biter

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s basketball team suffered a tough loss to Virginia Tech (10-6, 1-2) on Sunday afternoon, falling 68-64 in a game that slipped away in the final moments.

Despite leading for over 32 minutes, the Hurricanes (11-4, 1-3) saw their 12-point fourth-quarter advantage evaporate as the Hokies closed the game on a 21-5 run to secure the comeback victory.

Miami’s offense was well-balanced, with six players contributing at least five points, and three finishing in double figures. The Hurricanes shot an efficient 44.6% from the field and an impressive 81.8% from the free-throw line. Defensively, they limited Virginia Tech to 38.2% shooting overall, but the Hokies excelled from beyond the arc, hitting 37.9% of their three-point attempts.

Standout Performances
Cameron Williams led Miami with a double-double, tallying 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jasmyne Roberts added 13 points, while Haley Cavinder contributed 12 points, six rebounds, and a game-high six assists. Hanna Cavinder chipped in nine points, and freshman Leah Harmon provided six points off the bench.

Miami opened strong, hitting three of their first four shots to take a 6-0 lead. Virginia Tech responded, and the teams were tied at 10 with 3:33 remaining in the first quarter. The Hokies edged the Hurricanes 6-5 in the final minutes of the period, giving Virginia Tech a narrow 16-15 lead heading into the second quarter.

The game remained evenly matched throughout the second quarter, with both teams heading into halftime tied at 28.

Miami took control in the third quarter, launching a 14-2 run to build a 42-30 lead by the 4:16 mark. They maintained a seven-point advantage entering the final quarter.

The Hurricanes extended their lead to 59-47 early in the fourth, but Virginia Tech rallied. The Hokies surged ahead by one point with just over a minute remaining. After Miami tied the game with a free throw at 41 seconds, Virginia Tech reclaimed the lead with two free throws at the 13-second mark. A missed Miami shot to tie sealed their fate, and Virginia Tech hit two more free throws to secure the win.

The Hurricanes will look to bounce back when they travel to Syracuse to face the Orange on Sunday, January 12, at 6 p.m.
