Virginia Tech Coach Brent Pry Steps Down Following Loss to Minnesota
Virginia Tech head football coach Brent Pry has officially agreed to step down from his role after the Hokies’ crushing loss to Minnesota, a decision that comes amid growing scrutiny of the program’s direction. The announcement, made late Sunday evening, marks the end of Pry’s tenure, which began in 2022.
In a statement, Pry reflected on his time leading the program:
“Coaching at Virginia Tech has been one of the greatest privileges of my career. While this season didn’t go as planned, I’m proud of the relationships built and the foundation we’ve laid. It’s time for a new leader to take the Hokies forward.”
Virginia Tech’s 31-17 defeat to Minnesota on Saturday was the tipping point for a season riddled with inconsistency and missed opportunities. The loss dropped the Hokies to a 4-8 record, their second consecutive losing season under Pry, sparking intensified calls for a change in leadership.
Athletic Director Whit Babcock addressed the decision in a press conference:
“We deeply appreciate Coach Pry’s hard work and dedication to our football program. After careful evaluation, we’ve mutually agreed that a change is necessary to achieve the goals and expectations of Virginia Tech football.”
The Hokies have struggled to regain their footing as an ACC powerhouse, and Pry’s inability to generate consistent results led to mounting frustration among fans and alumni. His tenure was marked by flashes of potential but was ultimately overshadowed by a lack of progress in key areas such as recruiting and in-game performance.
Virginia Tech will begin a nationwide search for a new head coach immediately. In the interim, a member of the coaching staff will take over responsibilities until a permanent replacement is found.
As the program looks to rebuild, Hokie Nation hopes this change will pave the way for a return to the competitive heights they once enjoyed.
