The San Diego Padres are reportedly considering offloading some of their top-tier players this offseason, particularly those with expiring contracts. The team’s roster, filled with high-priced talent, has started to strain its resources. One prominent trade candidate is ace pitcher Dylan Cease, who Spotrac projects to command a $108 million free-agent deal after his contract expires next season.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently speculated that the Padres might trade Cease to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for a two-prospect package. Rymer’s proposed trade would send Cease to Baltimore, potentially replacing Corbin Burnes, whom the Orioles recently lost to the Diamondbacks. The deal is outlined as follows:
Baltimore Orioles receive: RHP Dylan Cease
San Diego Padres receive: OF Heston Kjerstad, OF Enrique Bradfield Jr. (No. 4 prospect)
Rymer noted: “According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the O’s were interested in Cease even before Corbin Burnes departed for Arizona. With Burnes gone, the need for a top-tier starter in Baltimore’s rotation is even more pressing. If the Orioles were to trade for Cease, they would essentially be making the same move they considered for Burnes—but with some added advantages..
“Though Burnes is a superior pitcher, his declining strikeout ability makes Cease a more attractive option right now. Cease, who ranked in the 92nd percentile for whiff rate this season, offers Baltimore a strong, long-term option. Furthermore, while Burnes likely would’ve been a one-year rental, Cease fits within Baltimore’s budget for a potential re-signing.”
With Baltimore’s farm system still rich in hitters, despite recent trades, Rymer suggests this move would align with the Orioles’ needs and San Diego’s desire for young talent.
