The Baltimore Orioles may need to act quickly to bolster their rotation as options for acquiring an ace dwindle. With Corbin Burnes signing with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Orioles should now turn their attention to a potential trade for three-time All-Star Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners.

Despite recent graduations of top prospects like Heston Kjerstad and Jackson Holliday, Baltimore’s farm system remains strong enough to put together a compelling trade package. Castillo has been a steady presence at the front of the rotation, making at least 30 starts in each of the last two seasons and solidifying his reputation as a workhorse.

A potential trade could look like this:

Baltimore Orioles Receive:

  • SP Luis Castillo

Seattle Mariners Receive:

  • OF Dylan Beavers (Orioles No. 6 prospect)
  • OF Jud Fabian (Orioles No. 10 prospect)
  • RHP Patrick Reilly (Orioles No. 13 prospect)

While giving up three top-15 prospects might seem like a high price, Castillo’s contract offers significant value, with three guaranteed years of team control and a vesting option for 2028. Acquiring Castillo could provide the Orioles with a stable ace for up to four seasons, extending their contention window.

For the Mariners, trading Castillo would create an opportunity to address their offensive needs for 2025 and beyond. Even if they prefer not to rely solely on prospects, moving Castillo could help rebalance their roster. Mariners GM Justin Hollander may hesitate to part with a player of Castillo’s caliber, but a well-structured trade could help the team improve overall depth and long-term competitiveness.
