Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry has confirmed several key opt-outs ahead of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, as the Hokies prepare to face Minnesota on Friday night in Charlotte. With kickoff set for 7:30 p.m., the lingering question is who will suit up for Virginia Tech.
On Monday, after the team’s practice, Pry provided some clarity regarding player availability. Unsurprisingly, several players who have entered the transfer portal will not participate in the bowl game, including key contributors Mansoor Delane (headed to LSU), Braelin Moore (LSU), Xavier Chaplin (Auburn), and Mose Phillips (Missouri). These players are already focused on their future programs for 2025.
Pry also addressed other notable absences. Running back Bhayshul Tuten, right guard Kaden Moore, and linebacker Keonta Jenkins have been away from the team since before Christmas and will not play in the bowl. Additionally, linebacker Sam Brumfield, who recently entered the transfer portal after gaining an extra year of eligibility due to JUCO rules, is also out. His decision comes in the wake of defensive coordinator Chris Marve’s recent firing.
One significant absence will be quarterback Kyron Drones, who is not expected to play as he recovers from multiple injuries. The coaching staff aims to prioritize his health ahead of the 2025 season.
With so many opt-outs, the Hokies face a challenging matchup, but the game provides an opportunity for younger players to showcase their potential and gain valuable experience.
