Rutgers Unveils the Fake Tush Push Play in Thrilling Bowl Game
The Philadelphia Eagles have mastered the Tush Push play so effectively that it’s no wonder other teams are eager to adopt it for short-yardage scenarios. Known for his appreciation of hard-nosed football, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano embraced this power-driven tactic during Thursday night’s Rate Bowl against Kansas State. However, the Scarlet Knights added a creative twist, executing it to perfection.
Quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis took the snap and, instead of surging forward, pulled off a Statue of Liberty-style handoff behind his back. This unexpected move caught the Wildcats’ defense off guard, allowing Antwan Raymond to dash into the end zone for a one-yard touchdown, extending Rutgers’ lead to 41-29 early in the fourth quarter.
The play’s ingenuity was impressive, and credit goes to Rutgers for debuting such a crafty maneuver. After all, if you can’t experiment with something unconventional in a bowl game the day after Christmas, when can you?
Unfortunately for the Scarlet Knights, their 12-point cushion wasn’t enough. Kansas State staged a dramatic comeback to secure a 44-41 victory.
