Virginia Tech Football Update: Transfer Portal Activity and Key Returnees for 2025
In recent days, Virginia Tech football has received positive updates regarding transfer portal commitments and player retainment for the 2025 season. After significant player retention last year, this edition of Hokie football news begins with two players confirming their return for the next season.
Tucker Holloway Returning for 2025
Wide receiver and standout punt returner Tucker Holloway, whose absence was felt this season due to injury, has announced he will return for the 2025 season. While Virginia Tech’s offensive depth cushioned his loss, his impact on special teams was unmatched, making him one of the ACC’s top punt returners. In his absence, Jaylin Lane handled most of the punt return duties, but Lane won’t play in the upcoming Duke’s Mayo Bowl against Minnesota. This gives younger players a chance to step up, but Holloway’s return is a significant boost for the Hokies moving forward.
Kelvin Gilliam Staying On
Defensive lineman Kelvin Gilliam, a Richmond native and Oklahoma transfer, has also confirmed his return for the 2025 season. Gilliam contributed 31 tackles, one sack, and a forced fumble this season. With the defensive line set to lose some players, his decision to stay is a crucial win for Virginia Tech’s defensive stability.
Khurtiss Perry Enters Transfer Portal
Defensive lineman Khurtiss Perry, who transferred to Virginia Tech from Alabama in the spring, has officially entered the transfer portal. Initially reported by Pete Nakos of On3 earlier this month, Perry’s departure raises questions about where he will land for the upcoming season.
Jordan Scruggs Commits to West Virginia
South Alabama transfer and All-Sun Belt cornerback Jordan Scruggs, who visited Virginia Tech earlier this month, has committed to West Virginia. While losing Scruggs is a setback, the Hokies have bolstered their secondary with three recent transfer commitments: Sherrod Covil, Jr. from Clemson, Isaiah Brown-Murray from East Carolina, and Tyson Flowers from Rice.
Virginia Tech continues to adapt and strengthen its roster as it prepares for the future.
