Virginia Tech Football: Brent Pry Hits Jackpot With Offensive Line Coach Hire
Two weeks ago, Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry made significant changes to his staff, parting ways with three assistant coaches. Defensive coordinator Chris Marve, offensive line coach Ron Crook, and strength coach Dwight Galt IV were all relieved of their duties. The departures of Marve and Crook were not unexpected, given the underwhelming performance of their respective units during the 2024 season.
Following a disappointing season, it’s clear Pry is making these moves to address mounting pressure. With issues in game management and a dismal 1-12 record in one-score games, including five close losses in 2024, his room for error is shrinking. To turn things around, Pry must nail his new hires. On Monday, he announced the hiring of a new offensive line coach from a Big 12 program.
Virginia Tech Brings in Matt Moore as Offensive Line Coach
The Hokies have named Matt Moore, formerly West Virginia’s offensive line coach, to replace Crook. On paper, this seems like a significant win for Pry and Virginia Tech. Moore boasts 19 years of Division I coaching experience and has developed several players who made it to the NFL.
“I am thrilled to add Matt Moore to our staff,” Pry stated in a press release. “He brings extensive experience coaching offensive lines at the Power Four level. His proven ability to develop strong, tough offensive line units that play with exceptional physicality will be a tremendous asset to our program. His leadership and expertise align perfectly with our vision for Virginia Tech football.”
Moore’s expertise will be critical as the Hokies face challenges rebuilding their offensive line, which has struggled over the past two seasons. With players leaving for the transfer portal and others exhausting their eligibility, Virginia Tech must bolster its line through transfers. Moore’s immediate task will be assembling a cohesive unit to protect returning quarterbacks Kyron Drones and Pop Watson. It wouldn’t be surprising if some of Moore’s former players at West Virginia followed him to Blacksburg.
This hire looks like a major upgrade, precisely what Pry needs as the pressure builds heading into 2025. Moore’s track record inspires optimism, and fans have reason to be excited about his arrival. The next step is equipping him with the right talent to develop as quickly as possible.
