NEWS NOW: giants on a survey to snagging in a standout

The San Francisco Giants may set their sights on New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso in free agency after missing out on first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. Initially linked to Goldschmidt, the Giants saw him sign a one-year, $12.5 million deal with the New York Yankees. Now, according to FanSided’s Zachary Rotman, Alonso could emerge as a prime target for San Francisco.

Rotman suggested that with a depleted market and limited suitors for Alonso, the Giants could negotiate a reasonable deal similar to those signed by Blake Snell and Matt Chapman last offseason. “Alonso would bring another big bat to the lineup, turning the Giants into serious Wild Card contenders,” Rotman explained, adding that such a move could pave the way for Alonso to either cash in next offseason or commit long-term to San Francisco.

However, the Giants’ pursuit of Alonso might hinge on the outcome of Corbin Burnes’ free agency. San Francisco is currently seen as the favorite to land Burnes, but signing the ace could limit their ability to chase Alonso financially. If the Giants miss out on Burnes, they may redirect their focus—and funds—toward signing the power-hitting Alonso, a move that could significantly enhance their roster.
