JUST IN: veteran Cardinals starters land commitment to Guardians over Tigers

MLB Rumors: Tigers, Guardians Eye Cardinals’ Veteran Starters

The St. Louis Cardinals have signaled their intent to usher in a younger roster for the 2025 season, believing that their veteran core has reached its ceiling. As part of this strategy, the Cardinals have made several veteran players available for trade, including starting pitchers Erick Fedde and Steven Matz.

While neither Fedde nor Matz is considered a marquee rotation addition, their experience and relatively low cost both in salary and prospect capital make them intriguing trade targets. According to MLB.com, the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers, both playoff teams in 2024, have shown interest in acquiring the duo.

Operating on limited budgets, the Guardians (23rd in payroll) and Tigers (26th) managed to combine for 178 wins last season. Their interest in affordable, veteran pitching aligns with their approach to team-building.

Fedde’s Revival Sparks Interest

Erick Fedde, who returned to the MLB in 2024, has revitalized his career and played a key role after being acquired by the Cardinals midseason to bolster their playoff push. With a manageable $7.5 million salary for 2025, Fedde represents a cost-effective option for rotation depth, making him an appealing target for both the Tigers and Guardians.

Matz’s Question Marks

Steven Matz presents more risk for potential suitors. Limited to just 44.1 innings in 2024, Matz posted a 5.08 ERA and is set to earn $12.5 million in 2025. Despite his struggles, Matz’s expiring contract might still attract teams looking for short-term pitching help without long-term financial obligations.

Other Cardinals Trade Possibilities

In addition to Fedde and Matz, the Cardinals have also floated the possibility of trading star third baseman Nolan Arenado. Looking to shed his significant salary and create opportunities for younger players, the Cardinals reportedly declined a proposal from the New York Yankees that would have sent Marcus Stroman to St. Louis in exchange for Arenado. The decision highlights the Cardinals’ commitment to avoiding additional payroll burdens in any potential Arenado trade.

As the offseason progresses, the Cardinals’ willingness to part with veteran players could significantly reshape their roster and provide opportunities for teams like the Tigers and Guardians to strengthen their rotations without breaking the bank.
