The New York Yankees announced the acquisition of two bolsters from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for C Jose Trevino.
Fernando Cruz, 34, had a 3-8 record and a 4.86 ERA across 69 appearances (including three starts) for the Reds in 2024. His strikeout rate of 14.72 per 9.0 innings was the highest in the majors among pitchers with at least 50 innings pitched, while his 37.8% strikeout rate ranked third. Cruz recorded 95 strikeouts as a reliever, the third-most in the National League and 10th-most in MLB. Over his three-year career with the Reds (2022–2024), Cruz has compiled a 4-11 record with a 4.52 ERA in 141 games (seven starts) and has held right-handed hitters to a .187 batting average. His 185 strikeouts as a reliever since 2023 rank fifth in MLB over that span. Originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 2007, Cruz joined the Reds as a Minor League free agent in 2022.
Alex Jackson, 28, played 58 games for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2024, hitting .122 with 17 runs, seven doubles, three home runs, and 12 RBIs while throwing out 28.2% of base stealers. In 28 games at Triple-A Durham, he batted .238 with eight home runs and 20 RBIs. Over parts of five MLB seasons with Atlanta, Miami, Milwaukee, and Tampa Bay, Jackson has a career batting average of .132 in 124 games. He was originally drafted sixth overall by the Seattle Mariners in 2014 and signed with the Reds as a Minor League free agent in November 2024.
Jose Trevino, 32, hit .215 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs in 74 games for the Yankees in 2024. Over his seven-year MLB career with Texas (2018–2021) and New York (2022–2024), Trevino has a .236 career average in 400 games. The Yankees originally acquired him from the Rangers in 2022.
