Virginia Tech Legend Michael Vick Set to Lead Norfolk State Football

Michael Vick, the legendary Virginia Tech quarterback and 13-year NFL veteran, is set to become the new head football coach at Norfolk State University. The news, first reported by David Teel of The Virginian-Pilot, marks a major milestone in Vick’s post-playing career.

Unlike many former players who start in entry-level coaching roles, Vick is bypassing positions like college football analyst or NFL quarterback coach to take the reins of a Division I program. The Norfolk State Spartans are poised to welcome him as their head coach, though the school has yet to make an official announcement. Vick, however, has stated that the deal is finalized.

Earlier this week, Vick’s name surfaced in connection with Sacramento State’s head coaching vacancy. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Sacramento State was prepared to support Vick with an experienced coaching staff and a $50 million NIL fund to assemble a competitive roster. Despite the enticing offer, Vick ultimately chose to return to his roots in Virginia’s 757 area.

Born and raised in Newport News, Vick attended Warwick High School before becoming a star at Virginia Tech. During his three seasons in Blacksburg, he led the Hokies to a national championship appearance and solidified himself as one of college football’s most electrifying players. In 2001, he was selected first overall in the NFL Draft.

Since retiring from professional football, Vick has worked as a media analyst for FOX Sports and has remained closely connected to the Virginia Tech program, particularly under head coach Brent Pry. His return to coaching comes as Pry faces scrutiny following a mediocre 6-6 season, raising speculation about how Vick’s potential success at Norfolk State could impact the Hokies’ long-term plans.
