Cubs Trade Catcher Matt Thaiss to White Sox for Cash
Just hours after completing a blockbuster trade that sent former MVP Cody Bellinger to the New York Yankees, the Chicago Cubs finalized another deal Tuesday, trading recently acquired catcher Matt Thaiss to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for cash considerations, per the White Sox.
Thaiss, 29, has spent six seasons in the majors with the Los Angeles Angels, compiling a .208/.313/.342 slash line across 245 games. The Cubs had acquired him just last month in a deal that sent cash back to the Angels.
In 2024, Thaiss appeared in 57 games, hitting .204/.323/.299 with nine doubles, two home runs, and 16 RBIs over 157 at-bats. While primarily a catcher, he has also played 47 games at third base and 31 at first base, showcasing his versatility.
With the White Sox, Thaiss is expected to form a catching tandem with Korey Lee for the 2024 season. The move also fills the final spot on Chicago’s 40-man roster, requiring no additional roster adjustments.
