Clemson Secures First Non-Quarterback Transfer Commitment Under Dabo Swinney
Dabo Swinney is adapting to the evolving landscape of college football.
For years, Swinney avoided tapping into the transfer portal, which has been a significant tool for roster-building since its inception in 2018. However, that approach shifted on Monday as Clemson secured its first-ever non-quarterback transfer commitment.
Former Southeast Missouri State wide receiver Tristan Smith announced his decision to join the Tigers, marking a notable addition for both the team and Swinney’s evolving strategy. Since 2021, Clemson has seen 43 players leave via the transfer portal, while only two—quarterbacks Hunter Johnson and Paul Tyson—joined during that time. Neither played significant snaps for the Tigers.
Smith, a junior, brings a strong resume to Clemson. In 2024, he tallied 76 receptions for 934 yards and six touchdowns, along with a rushing touchdown on his lone carry. His versatility and production make him a key weapon for quarterback Cade Klubnik, should Klubnik return for a third season.
This move signals a potential new era for Swinney and Clemson, as the Tigers leverage the portal to remain competitive in college football’s rapidly changing environment.
