MAJOR BREAKING: Virginia Tech Fires another staff in just a season.

Virginia Tech has made significant changes to its football coaching staff following a 6-6 season under head coach Brent Pry. On Thursday, the program announced the dismissal of several staff members, including defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Chris Marve, offensive line coach Ron Crook, and senior director of strength and conditioning Dwight Galt IV.

Marve, who previously coached at Florida State from 2020-21, was in his third season as Virginia Tech’s defensive coordinator. Despite the Hokies ranking 44th in scoring defense (allowing 22.8 points per game) and 75th in total defense (379.8 yards per game) in 2024, inconsistent performances—such as allowing 30+ points in four losses—prompted the decision.

“I appreciate the work of Coach Marve, Coach Crook, and Coach Galt,” said Pry in a statement. “However, our on-field results have not met our standards. As head coach, it is my responsibility to make the necessary changes to restore this program to its rightful place among college football’s best.”

Marve had previously played a role in developing standout linebackers such as Kalen DeLoach and DJ Lundy during his time at Florida State. He also held coaching positions at Vanderbilt and Mississippi State after a successful playing career with the Commodores. Earlier this year, Marve signed an extension with Virginia Tech, set to pay him $875,000 annually through 2027.

Virginia Tech’s defense showed promise in the 2023 season, finishing in the top 20 nationally in total defense and recording 39 sacks, the second-highest in the ACC. However, the lack of consistent results in 2024 led to the reshuffle. Florida State, where Marve previously coached, has also revamped its defensive staff with notable hires such as Tony White as defensive coordinator and Terrance Knighton as defensive line coach.

As coaching changes continue across college football, Virginia Tech aims to rebuild and position itself among the top programs in the nation.
