The Detroit Tigers have signed veteran right-hander Alex Cobb to a one-year, $15 million contract, adding experience to their starting rotation. The deal, announced Tuesday, includes potential bonuses of up to $1 million if Cobb reaches 140 and 150 innings pitched.
This move comes as the Tigers look to build on their progress, having made their first postseason appearance since 2014. Detroit secured an AL wild-card spot, swept Houston in the opening round, and was eliminated by Cleveland in the AL Division Series.
Cobb, 37, joins a rotation anchored by AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal. Despite limited action this season, Cobb impressed, going 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA in three regular-season starts for the Guardians and appearing in two postseason games for the AL Central champions.
He started Game 3 of the ALDS in Detroit, surrendering two runs on three hits over three innings in a 3-0 loss. In 2023, Cobb posted a 7-7 record with a 3.87 ERA across 28 starts for San Francisco before undergoing hip surgery in October. Traded to the Guardians in July, Cobb returned to action later in the season.
Over his 13-year career, Cobb holds a 79-76 record with a 3.84 ERA in 233 starts, having also pitched for Tampa Bay, Baltimore, and the Los Angeles Angels. A Boston native, Cobb was selected by Tampa Bay in the fourth round of the 2006 amateur draft and debuted in the majors in 2011, spending six seasons with the Rays.
To make room for Cobb on the 40-man roster, the Tigers designated outfielder Akil Baddoo for assignment.
