The New York Yankees are pursuing offensive upgrades after missing out on Juan Soto, securing an eight-year, $218 million contract with starting pitcher Max Fried instead. General Manager Brian Cashman is now rumored to be eyeing Houston Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker as a potential addition. The Astros are reportedly open to trading Tucker, who is set to earn $16.7 million in 2025 and will become a free agent after that season. Both the Yankees and the Chicago Cubs have expressed interest in the left-handed slugger.
FanSided’s Adam Weinrib proposed a hypothetical trade package that could land Tucker in New York. The deal would send outfielder Jasson Dominguez, right-handed pitcher Chase Hampton, and left-handed pitcher Henry Lalane to Houston in exchange for Tucker. Weinrib described the trade as “painful,” particularly due to the inclusion of Dominguez. The young outfielder, who was sidelined for most of 2024 with Tommy John surgery and an oblique injury, struggled during his limited playing time, hitting just .179 with defensive concerns. Despite this, his 2023 debut showcased potential, making him a valuable piece for the Yankees’ future.
Weinrib suggests that the uncertainty surrounding Dominguez’s health and performance could make him expendable if Tucker is willing to consider a contract extension. Locking in Tucker long-term would likely be more affordable than retaining Soto, with Spotrac projecting Tucker’s market value at seven years and $195 million. While the trade could sting, it might be a necessary move to bolster the Yankees’ offense for 2025 and beyond.
