The Detroit Tigers have shown interest in free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman, entering a competitive market that includes the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros. According to Sean McAdam of Mass Live, the Tigers are among the top contenders for the 31-year-old, who has spent his entire nine-year MLB career with the Astros.
Bregman had a strong 2024 season, hitting .260 with a .768 OPS, 26 home runs, and 75 RBIs. He also claimed his first Gold Glove, adding to a decorated career featuring two World Series titles and two All-Star selections.
Despite their interest, the Tigers may face financial hurdles in signing Bregman. Jon Heyman of the New York Post suggested the veteran third baseman could be “pricey” for a team aiming to stay fiscally responsible while building a competitive roster.
Alex Bregman
“The Tigers are interested in star free-agent 3B Alex Bregman, which would give him a chance to reunite with manager A.J. Hinch from their Houston days — and yes, the incumbent Astros are in with an offer,” Heyman noted. “Ultimately, Bregman might be pricey for Detroit.”
If the Tigers can land Bregman, they’d gain a proven hitter and elite defender to bolster their infield as they continue rebuilding. However, with several high-profile teams also in the mix, Detroit faces tough competition for his signature.
