The Buffalo Bills squandered a record-setting performance by quarterback Josh Allen on Sunday, falling 44-42 to the Los Angeles Rams. The defeat significantly dampened Buffalo’s chances of overtaking the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC’s top seed, though the team has already secured the AFC East title and is still in the playoff hunt.
One analyst has proposed the Bills bolster their defense by adding an experienced All-Pro cornerback currently available on the free-agent market.
Xavien Howard Touted as Potential Signing
Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report suggested the Bills should consider signing former Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard. The 31-year-old free agent could provide much-needed depth and stability to Buffalo’s defense as they aim for a deep postseason run.
“This might be the week the Bills seriously evaluate adding another defensive back,” Ballentine wrote. “They’re on the brink of a Super Bowl-caliber season but need a few tweaks to solidify their chances.”
Ballentine emphasized that Howard could be a cost-effective solution to the Bills’ defensive struggles. In his most recent NFL season, Howard performed well, allowing an 81.3 passer rating when targeted in 2023.
Despite having a strong defense overall, the Bills have occasionally faltered against elite offenses, giving up 44 points to the Rams and 35 to the Ravens this season.
Bills’ Recent Moves to Strengthen the Secondary
The team recently re-signed veteran safety Micah Hyde to their practice squad. Hyde, who has a long history with the team, was brought in to provide depth rather than address any specific deficiencies in the current safety group, according to head coach Sean McDermott.
“Micah is in a practice squad role,” McDermott clarified. “We’re confident in Taylor Rapp, Damar Hamlin, Cole Bishop, and Kareem Jackson. They’ve all been performing well in their respective roles.”
Hyde expressed enthusiasm for his new role, focusing on mentoring younger players while remaining available for game-day elevations. The Bills have three practice squad elevations left in the regular season, with additional opportunities in the playoffs.
“I’m here to help in any way I can,” Hyde said. “Whether it’s guiding younger players on and off the field or assisting the team as needed, I’m fully committed to contributing in this role.”
With the postseason approaching, adding a seasoned cornerback like Xavien Howard could give the Bills an edge as they contend for a Super Bowl berth.
