The New York Yankees are showing “strong interest” in free-agent outfielder Anthony Santander, a player who could help fill the void left by Juan Soto’s recent signing with the New York Mets. According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the Yankees are competing with AL East rivals, the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox, for Santander’s services.
Santander, 30, has spent his entire eight-year MLB career with the Baltimore Orioles. Known for his switch-hitting ability and impressive power, he is one of the most coveted free agents this offseason. Last year, he posted career highs with 44 home runs, 102 RBIs, and an .814 OPS.
Santander presents a viable “Plan B” for the Yankees after missing out on Soto. His power and versatility at the plate could thrive at Yankee Stadium, adding much-needed depth to a lineup centered around Aaron Judge. However, signing Santander alone won’t solve all the team’s issues. The Yankees also need upgrades at other positions, particularly on the right side of the infield, with Gleyber Torres and Anthony Rizzo potentially departing.
Replacing Soto’s impact will be challenging, but Santander offers a practical alternative. As the Winter Meetings begin, his market is expected to intensify, with the Yankees likely to stay aggressive in their pursuit.
