Former Tigers Prospect Willy Adames Signs $182 Million Deal with Giants
Shortstop Willy Adames, a former Detroit Tigers prospect, has inked a seven-year, $182 million contract with the San Francisco Giants.
Adames began his professional journey when the Tigers signed him out of the Dominican Republic in 2013. After two seasons in Detroit’s minor league system, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in 2014 as part of the deal for pitcher David Price. Over the years, Adames has developed into one of baseball’s top shortstops and now joins the ranks of its highest earners.
In 2021, the Rays traded Adames to the Milwaukee Brewers, clearing the way for Wander Franco. Adames excelled in Milwaukee, hitting 32 home runs in 161 games during the 2024 season, finishing with a .794 OPS (118 OPS+). While his defensive metrics declined slightly, Adames remains a well-regarded defender and expressed openness to transitioning to third base if needed. However, the Giants appear to have no plans for a position change, as they already have Matt Chapman at third base.
Adames’ signing is one of the first major moves of MLB’s offseason, with attention now turning to star outfielder Juan Soto, who is expected to secure a record-breaking deal.
This marks a significant moment for Adames, who has risen from his early days in Detroit’s system to become a cornerstone player for the Giants.
