Nolan Arenado: A Possible Fit for the Dodgers?
By Jesse Pearce – December 2, 2024
The Dodgers’ shortstop options may take a backseat to another intriguing possibility: Nolan Arenado.
On Sunday, the Cardinals’ third baseman shared a cryptic Instagram post featuring the song Dodger Blue. Was this a hint to Dodgers management or simply a seasonal nod to friends and family in Southern California?
Here’s what we know:
- Cardinals’ Financial Moves: St. Louis plans to lower payroll.
- Arenado’s Contract: He’s owed $64M through 2027—$27M in 2025, $22M in 2026, and $15M in 2027. Reports suggest he may waive his no-trade clause to join a World Series contender.
- Local Ties: Arenado graduated from El Toro High School in Lake Forest, CA, a short drive from Dodger Stadium.
Would the Dodgers pursue Arenado, a 10-time Gold Glove winner and six-time Platinum Glove honoree? While his defense remains elite, his offensive production has dipped over the past two seasons. Turning 34 in 2025, Arenado remains confident that offseason work will restore his hitting prowess.

Financial Considerations
For a trade to work, the Cardinals might need to absorb part of Arenado’s salary. A potential deal could include Max Muncy, who’s owed $14.5M in 2025, along with additional players such as pitchers Tony Gonsolin or Michael Grove.
Would such a package entice the Cardinals, and should the Dodgers take the risk on Arenado’s contract?
