Phillies Acquire Elite Closer Devin Williams in Potential Blockbuster Trade with Brewers
The Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers might find common ground in a mutually beneficial trade, according to a recent proposal. The Phillies are in need of a top-tier closer, while also considering trading All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm. Meanwhile, the Brewers, who recently extended Devin Williams, are preparing for the potential departure of star infielder Willy Adames.
Proposed Deal: Alec Bohm for Devin Williams
This potential swap, suggested by The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, would see Williams and a prospect head to Philadelphia in exchange for Bohm. Bowden explains the rationale:
“The Phillies need a dominant, right-handed closer. This deal makes sense for them, especially if they can sign Alex Bregman or Willy Adames to fill the gap at third base. Phillies prospect Aidan Miller isn’t expected to be MLB-ready until 2026 or later.”
For Milwaukee, Bohm would provide a solution at third base, replacing Adames in the lineup and allowing Brice Turang and Andruw Monasterio to take on larger roles in the infield.
Impact of the Trade
Devin Williams:
The 30-year-old closer, a two-time NL Reliever of the Year, posted a stellar 1.25 ERA with a 0.969 WHIP in 2024, along with 38 strikeouts and 14 saves in limited action. When healthy, Williams is one of the most dominant late-inning arms in baseball, and his addition would significantly bolster the Phillies’ bullpen as they aim for a World Series run.
Alec Bohm:
Coming off his first All-Star season, Bohm hit .280/.332/.448 with 15 home runs and 97 RBIs in 2024. Despite a late-season slump, he remains a rising star who could stabilize Milwaukee’s lineup and provide a reliable bat at third base.
A Win-Win for Both Teams
This trade could address both teams’ needs, with Philadelphia landing an elite closer and Milwaukee acquiring a versatile infielder ready to make an impact. While questions remain about Bohm’s consistency and Williams’ durability, the upside for both franchises makes this deal worth exploring.
