Lane Kiffin Criticizes Clemson’s Strength of Schedule in CFP Debate

As the college football regular season nears its end, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin voiced frustration over Clemson’s College Football Playoff (CFP) prospects during his weekly “Reb Talk” show. Kiffin, whose team is on the fringe of playoff contention, questioned Clemson’s strength of schedule compared to SEC teams.

Kiffin remarked, “It’s ridiculous the difference between playing in the SEC versus the ACC or Big 12. Clemson’s schedule compared to Alabama’s is a joke. Put some of those top-ranked teams in the SEC, and they’d finish .500.”

These comments come as Ole Miss, ranked No. 14, needs a win over Mississippi State and substantial chaos elsewhere to secure a playoff spot. Clemson, sitting at No. 12, can likely earn an at-large berth with a victory over No. 15 South Carolina this weekend. Kiffin’s critique highlights his team’s dwindling CFP hopes after a recent upset loss to unranked Florida.

Strength of Schedule Debate
While Kiffin pointed to the SEC’s rigor, his argument isn’t flawless. Despite Ole Miss having the nation’s 5th toughest schedule, the Rebels lost to three unranked teams (LSU, Florida, and Kentucky), undermining their playoff case. Meanwhile, Clemson’s schedule is ranked 31st, but they’ve handled their games effectively and could improve their resume with a win over South Carolina.

CFP Selection Committee Chairman Warde Manuel recently addressed the emphasis on strength of schedule, stating, “Teams can only play the opponents in front of them. Strength of schedule matters, but performance against competition is equally critical.” Manuel emphasized the committee’s role in assessing overall team performance rather than relying solely on rankings or metrics.

Clemson’s Opportunity vs. South Carolina
Clemson’s upcoming game against South Carolina could bolster their playoff chances, especially with the added rivalry stakes. Meanwhile, Ole Miss appears to be on the outside looking in. Kiffin’s comments reflect the frustration of a coach who knows his team missed key opportunities to secure a playoff spot.
