SANTA CLARA – The 49ers are in need of a backup quarterback, and with the New York Giants recently releasing Daniel Jones, could he be a potential fit for San Francisco?
Currently, the 49ers’ backup quarterbacks are Brandon Allen and Joshua Dobbs, who have a combined career record of 5-18. Neither of them inspires much confidence if Brock Purdy were to miss any time due to shoulder issues. While the 49ers haven’t officially ruled out Purdy for Sunday’s game against the Packers, he underwent an MRI on Thursday, and general manager John Lynch described Purdy’s status as “tenuous.”
If Purdy can’t go, Allen is slated to start. Given his 2-7 career record, it seems likely that Allen would struggle in that role—though anything can happen in sports. It’s possible he could pull off an upset against Green Bay, but more realistically, he would play poorly and lose. Allen, at best, should be a third-string QB, so why not consider signing Jones?
Jones has more experience, and while he’s never been on a team as strong as the 49ers, it’s possible that San Francisco’s supporting cast could help elevate his game, much like it did for Jimmy Garoppolo. Jones is, at the very least, an upgrade over Allen.
However, I don’t expect the 49ers to make a move for Jones. It would be a bold decision, and it’s much easier for the team to stick with Allen, take the loss, and chalk it up to circumstances.
