The Detroit Lions have made a roster move, activating Brodric Martin to the 53-man roster, as previously reported. Alongside this, the team made a change to their practice squad by releasing safety Erick Hallett and signing free-agent safety Kaevon Merriweather.
Merriweather, who had played 200 special teams snaps across nine games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season, was waived by Tampa earlier in the week after the team signed veteran Mike Edwards. Merriweather went unclaimed on waivers and became a free agent.
Hallett, who had joined the Lions’ practice squad just before the season following training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars, has not appeared in any NFL games and is now a free agent.
Merriweather, originally from Belleview and undrafted in 2023 out of Iowa, spent his rookie year with Tampa Bay. He made the Buccaneers’ 53-man roster, where he played in 16 games, mostly on special teams, earning an 80.0 PFF special teams grade. By the end of the season, he had also carved out a defensive role, averaging nearly 20 defensive snaps per game in the final eight weeks.
