JUST IN: Falcons names perfect Kirk Cousins replacement.

Matt Ryan Weighs in on Falcons’ Quarterback Situation

The Atlanta Falcons are coming off their worst loss of the season, a crushing 38-6 defeat to the Denver Broncos. With the team limping into their bye week, many fans are clamoring for rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. to take over for Kirk Cousins. Penix, the 8th overall draft pick, saw his first significant action late in the blowout loss and impressed with his arm strength and accuracy, earning the highest player grade on the team from PFF.

However, former Falcons quarterback and CBS Sports analyst Matt Ryan believes it’s too soon for such a drastic move. “It’s been two bad weeks, but they’re still in first place in the division,” Ryan said. “Unless the season spirals out of control, I don’t see them making a change anytime soon.”

While Penix showed promise in his limited snaps, Ryan and others caution against overreacting. Cousins has largely performed as a top-tier quarterback this season, and the Falcons remain in control of their playoff destiny. Penix’s four-pass performance against backup defenders isn’t enough to create a legitimate quarterback controversy.

The Falcons’ bye week offers a chance to regroup after back-to-back poor performances. Despite fan frustration, the team appears committed to Cousins as their starter moving forward. With Atlanta still atop the division, the focus remains on stabilizing the team rather than overhauling its leadership at quarterback.

Atlanta Hawks’ Youth Shines in Win Over Kings

The Atlanta Hawks secured an impressive road victory against the Sacramento Kings, despite missing key player Jalen Johnson and a quiet night from Trae Young, who had just seven points but dished out a season-high 19 assists. This win highlights the growing impact of the team’s young core, with several players stepping up in critical moments.

De’Andre Hunter led the team off the bench, scoring 24 points on efficient shooting, while rookie Zaccharie Risacher added 18 points and showcased his all-around game. However, it was Dyson Daniels, nicknamed “The Great Barrier Thief,” who stole the spotlight with his defensive dominance.

Daniels, a Defensive Player of the Year candidate, delivered another stellar performance. While he didn’t record a steal until the game’s final play, his defense on De’Aaron Fox—a player coming off consecutive 60- and 49-point games—proved decisive. Fox was limited to 28 points, with Daniels stripping him on the game’s final possession to seal the victory.

On offense, Daniels contributed 14 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, while also adding four blocks on defense. At just 21 years old, Daniels is emerging as a cornerstone alongside Trae Young, providing the defensive presence the Hawks have long sought.

With the Hawks’ young talent showing they can compete with any team, this season is shaping up to be a pivotal one in Atlanta’s quest to solidify itself as a playoff contender.
