Baylor Bears Secure Dave Aranda’s Future Amid Late-Season Turnaround

The Baylor Bears have opted to extend head coach Dave Aranda’s tenure following a notable improvement in their performance this season. Currently holding a 6-4 record, with three losses in Big 12 play, Baylor has shown significant progress compared to last year’s disappointing 3-9 campaign. The team’s enhanced defense has contributed to their success, allowing far fewer points than last season, though there’s still room for growth.

Aranda’s position with Baylor appeared uncertain earlier this season, but the recent announcement of his extension solidifies his role. While the decision may seem unusual given he was already under contract, it reflects the program’s confidence in his leadership during a pivotal season. Aranda’s record with Baylor, sitting at an even 29-29, includes a Big 12 Championship win in 2021 but only one winning season so far.

Despite his mixed track record as head coach, Aranda’s reputation as a top-tier defensive coordinator during his stints at LSU, Wisconsin, and Utah State is well-established. However, questions linger among fans regarding his ability to maintain long-term success with the Bears, particularly given recent struggles on both sides of the ball.

A major factor in Aranda’s current success appears to be the relationship he has built with his players. The team’s recent four-game winning streak, which secured bowl eligibility, highlights their improved offensive performance under offensive coordinator Jake Spavital. Quarterback Sawyer Robertson and running back Bryson Washington have been key contributors, helping the Bears average over 45 points per game during this stretch.

With two games remaining against Houston and Kansas, Baylor has the chance to secure a winning season for just the second time under Aranda. However, the defense remains a concern, allowing nearly 28 points per game and showing lapses in discipline. While the team has made strides this year, both Aranda and Baylor must address these challenges to sustain success moving forward.
