The St. Louis Cardinals have announced their new first baseman for the 2025 season: Willson Contreras. With Paul Goldschmidt set to hit free agency, the team was already anticipating a change at first base. Given their payroll restrictions this offseason, pursuing a high-priced free agent was off the table. Instead, the Cardinals have decided to promote Contreras, who will transition from catcher to a role that includes splitting time between first base and designated hitter.
Contreras still has three years remaining on the contract he signed with the Cardinals ahead of the 2023 season. While other players, such as Alec Burleson and Luken Baker, were also potential candidates for first base, the Cardinals see Contreras as a valuable offensive asset in the lineup. The position change could also help improve his health, longevity, and overall performance, making it a strategic move for the team.
The decision also puts to rest speculation about the possibility of trading Contreras, as the Cardinals are committed to keeping him. Furthermore, by moving Contreras out from behind the plate, the team avoids the need to make difficult decisions about their catching tandem. GM John Mozeliak confirmed that Pedro Pagés and Iván Herrera will handle the catching duties in 2025.
