The Carolina Panthers have made a definitive decision about quarterback Bryce Young’s future with the team — for now. On Tuesday, the NFL’s trade deadline for the 2024 season, it was confirmed that the Panthers will not be trading Young, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic. While other teams had reportedly inquired about Young, Carolina has opted to keep him through the deadline, ensuring he will remain with the team for the rest of this season.
Young’s 2024 campaign has been a turbulent one. After leading the Panthers to an 0-2 record, with a lackluster performance in his first two games — completing just 55.4% of his passes for 245 yards, zero touchdowns, and three interceptions — Young was benched in favor of veteran Andy Dalton. However, when Dalton was involved in a car accident, Young was called back into the starting role.
In Week 8, Young showed signs of improvement, throwing for 224 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions against a tough Denver Broncos defense. Then, in Week 9, he led the Panthers to a 23-22 upset win over the New Orleans Saints, completing 16 of 26 passes for 171 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
The Panthers had invested heavily in Young, trading significant assets to the Chicago Bears in order to select him as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. With just 20 career starts, they are not ready to give up on him yet. Rather than moving him for a mid-to-late round draft pick at the deadline, the Panthers plan to stick with Young as their starter, hoping that with a full offseason, they can unlock his potential.
At just 23 years old and in the midst of his second NFL season, the Panthers are still committed to developing Young as their franchise quarterback for the future.
